The Christmas prep has started...

Christmas seems like it's been going for months already! But then considering I started working on festive themed ideas back in September it's probably fair to say that it actually HAS been going on for months already! I've tried not to get to into it just yet! I knew that come Christmas day I'll be sick of the festive cheer so I've reigned it in ... until tomorrow that is! For me the 1st December is when it's acceptable to listen to the xmas tunes, feast on mince pies for breakfast and watch really naff Christmas movies when I should really be working! Not to mention all the present wrapping which has to be one of my favourite jobs! (Even though I start off trying to wrap really neatly but then halfway through the pile to be wrapped you start to be a bit slap dash and give up all hope of trying to make the presents look pretty ... and don't get me started on those really awkwardly shaped presents that end up looking like a mess of paper and cellotape!)

This year I've had a go at making Christmas cake and Christmas pudding as well! (Is that a sign of getting old?!) They're all made up and I'm feeding them with alcohol, whenever I remember, they look pretty edible so we should get away without being poisoned on Christmas day!

I was photographing some of the Christmas baubles that are for sale on the website during the week so I had to put the Christmas tree up! I resisted in putting the whole tree up though and only did a section! I think the crop feature on the computer is my new best friend! If only could of seen what it really looked like out of the finished images!

How are your Christmas preparations going?

Procrastination and Pinterest...

I haven't blogged for a while so I thought I might pop in and write a quick blog post ... otherwise known as a tactic to put off tackling the ever growing 'to do' list! (It's amazing the things you can think of to do to avoid doing something else!)

Joining Pinterest was another of those avoidence moments! Gosh it's so easy to while away the hours on there! Luckily I was given a handy tip to keep me on track ... I get an egg timer and set it to 15 minutes (the timer on a phone works just as well but for novelty value the egg timer is much better!) once that alarm goes that's it I log out, with some restraint, and save more browsing through lovely photo's for another day!

Apparently Pinterest is the new tool for advertising your crafts/business so I thought in the interests of Random Button it was worth checking out even though these days there seems to be something new every month that's set to be the next big interent hit! (That makes me sound really old!)

If you like vintagey, crafty, buttony, romanticy pretty images and products then feel free to follow me here - www.pinterest.com/randombutton

Here's what my Pinterest page is looking like so far...

In other news I've decided to close my Not Mass Produced shop. I just can't maintain it as much as I would want to and have to admit that it gets a little neglected! It will close on Thursday 1st November and until then everything has been put into the sale! There is only one of everything so grab it all now at a discounted price before it all goes!

Buy British Handmade

So the Random Button blog took a little holiday last week (in reality it was sadly neglected!) but it's back again now! Over the last few weeks I've got pretty behind with keeping various online shops up to date so I've been busy behind the scenes trying to build up existing stock and making up some new pieces!

Now that everywhere has been stocked up to a reasonable level I can go back to the hard task of bombarding you all with endless promotions, product listings and 'the hard sell' which starts here with a rallying call to BUY BRITISH HANDMADE!

These day's it's so easy, when you're looking for a present or even just something to add to your home, to walk down any high street in Britain and amble into the same shops, and let's face it most high streets look pretty much the same all selling mass produced items. As nice as these things may be and let's be honest who isn't in favour of a bargain or two from the high street, have you ever thought about where they have been made and even how many other people have gone into the same shop chain and bought exactly the same item? I'm not going to pretend to know where big stores get there stock from and this isn't a lecture as to the conditions or impact this has on the economy good or bad in this and in other countries as I'm sure it does but in these times isn't it best to buy British made wherever we can?

Life today is all about being individual - we all know what we like and what we don't like so be brave, take a chance and buy something from a small independent retailer in Britain and direct from the maker themselves! The use of the Internet and online shopping is an amazing tool for us to use to connect with people and find things that aren't available anywhere else! So why don't we all use it more often!

I know there is the thought in the back of your mind about the quality of items when you read that they are handmade or handcrafted - but believe me somebody has put their time, effort and love of the craft to make these pieces and if I know anything about designer makers I know that nothing goes out unless they are 100% satisfied with the finished item. If we are quite happy to buy something online from a chain store that we haven't seen up close how do we know the quality of that is better than something handmade?

Yes it's true sometimes handmade items can be a little more expensive than high street products but what would you rather - give your hard earned money to the bosses of a faceless big brand company or to Zoe in Bucks that spends her time lovingly making something specifically for you that's been personalised to your taste?! Plus in the handcrafted world you would be surprised what you can actually get for your money these days anyway!

If you are unsure about where to start in your buying handmade quest there are many website out there showcasing the design talent we have in this country! Sites like Boutique To You, Not Mass Produced and Wow Thank You are great places to start! Take a few minutes out of your day or put aside some time this weekend, because lets face it with this summer we're having we won't exactly be hitting the beach will we, and just have a look at what there is on offer!

Could you see any of these pieces in your home or even as a gift for an upcoming birthday?

A little side project!

Zoe's Blog...

People would think that doing a creative job would mean that you probably lived in a handmade filled house when in reality you're so busy making things for other people you neglect your own home, so here is something I've been working on for myself!

There's a multitude of free knitting and crochet patterns online just waiting to be made up by creative hands so I thought I would try and inspire some of you to get making by showing you one of the cushions I've whipped up for my own sofa basing my design on a pattern I found online!

The Slip Stitch Cushion pattern comes from the Blacker Yarns website (An a amazing website selling wonderful yarns, patterns,  kits and much more! www.blackeryarns.co.uk)

I chose a simple pattern that didn't require too much concentration (perfect for knitting in front of the T.V!) but something that was still a bit special! I adapted the design (by choice and by getting a little bit carried away!) by including a rib with button holes for the closing and doing the stripes every four rows so I always changed yarn at the same side - enabling me to twist the yarns at the end of the row to avoid sewing a hole heap of ends in! (Even though the yarn twisting caused a few tangles!)

Here's a quick snap of the work in progress...

And the finished product...

Work, Home, Work

This week at Random Button we have been glued to the computer and dedicated out precious crafting time to paper work , paper work and yet more paper work! We’ve been writing press releases, chasing up orders and the printer has been working in overdrive printing out our newly designed trade catalogues (we’re giving him a rest today to get his breath back!)
If you work from home you’ll know how difficult it is to keep focused and dedicated to the task in hand rather than getting distracted by day to day life (this morning’s washing up, laundry, twitter etc. the list really is endless!) But wouldn’t working from home be so much easier if your office space/craft room looked like one of these room ideas from ‘House toHome’
House to Home

House to Home

We’ve found these other great home office ideas from UK sellers on Etsy…

This would make an ideal desk to work on from 'Henley and Co'

These sticky note pads from 'Vivid' would be great for those scribbled notes!

Or even this distressed chalk board from 'Utopia Home and Garden'

How about this stitched desk clock from 'LAMDesigns'

Thanks for looking and don't forget to check out www.randombutton.co.uk
